Breaky Bottom 2010, Cuvee Reynolds Stone, Brut

This cuvee, a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, has an inviting nose of fresh bread, with a rich and creamy palate.   The mousse is soft and allows the character of the wine to open up and provide a very persistent finish.  It is slightly drier than most Champagne, but then the crisp green apple character that we love about the best of English fizz would be lost.  So if you tend to prefer your sparkling wines on the drier side, then this might be for you.

Breaky Bottom was our first foray into selling English wine and has remained our firm favourite - we still get notes from clients that attended a trip we organised nearly two years ago asking when we will be arranging another trip.  The term artisan is seldom as well suited as it is to Peter and the hand-crafted, exceptional sparkling wines he produces.  Peter Hall, who established this vineyard in the early 70's has fashioned some remarkable sparkling wines from the Seyval Blanc grape. His Champenoise parentage (Mercier) has inevitably lead Peter to focus on sparkling wine and with the maturation of his Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines we are seeing some new and exciting styles being produced.  We have to hope that as the Sparkling Wine in England falls into the hands of the large operators,  the smaller producers will not be swallowed up and lost.  With characters like Peter Hall around,  this is a treasure worth holding on to.  These wines are made using the same techniques as Champagne, from vines that actually share the same geological parentage.

`Elwood Wines were a revelation. I had NO IDEA wine could taste that good. Having wine delivered is rather luxurious too! The only down side I've noticed is that I have lost interest in...
