Description

Peter Hall has been making wines in this beautiful part of the The South Downs since 1974 and remains one of the early pioneers for some of England’s finest sparkling wines made in the traditional method.

The South Downs soil is connected to a rather exclusive geological club, which happens to be ideal for sparkling wine production, AKA the Paris Basin. This ring of chalk and limestone soil passes through Champagne and arrives across the channel to Southern England, where it extends across the country. Peter’s vines and personality are rooted in this unique soil.

Peter makes two cuvées each year and ages them in bottle for at least four years before they are disgorged.  The Cuvee Jack Pike, named in honour of his late friend who helped Peter plant his first vines in 1974, is pure Seyval Blanc.  These are the oldest vines at this estate and capture a uniquely English take on sparkling wine and what makes Breaky Bottom so special.

This cuvée was disgorged 12 months ago and is already showing beautifully. Pale lemon colour with a lovely mousse of fine bubbles. Biscuity on the nose with a hint of lemongrass. On the palate it opens with a ripe, creamy start and evolves into a tantalising, lemon sherbet and mouthwatering, long finish. Peter was an early pioneer of sparkling Seyval Blanc and this is uniquely English. Uniquely Breaky Bottom.

This is small batch wine production at its finest, made with so much love and dedication.
