Tim Atkin Rioja 2022 Special Report 93 Points
“Juan Luis Cañas sources this Gran Reserva from a single, 62-year-old parcel in Villabuena de Álava. Partnering Tempranillo with 5% Graciano, it’s youthful and full of life, so don’t be in a hurry to drink it. Textured, structured and refreshing, with perfumed French and American oak, tangy dark berry fruit and a balsamic lift.” 2023-28. 93 Points, TA, Feb 2022.

In 1970 Luis Cañas changed two hundred years of tradition and became the first winemaker in Rioja Alavesa to bottle his young wine rather than sell it as bulk.
This bold move, and his continued pioneering spirit, has cemented the winery’s enviable reputation as one of the most progressive in the region.
This Gran Reserva is made from a selection of old vines with an average of 50 years old. After a strict grape selection in the cellars, the berries undergo fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tank, before ageing in French and American oak for 24 months. It is then bottled and aged for a further 36 months prior to release.
